But anyway, in response to your objections:<BR/><BR/>1. In my experience, people who object to longevity research on "fix the world first" grounds haven't generally even thought about other overindulgences, and pretty much all of them regularly partake in what you'd classify as overindulgences in this context. But you might have encountered different people.<BR/><BR/>2. I hadn't thought about where the funding would come from at the time of writing this entry...but in either case (whether private funds or tax dollars), I think that there's a lot of money being spent on what is arguably waste and fluff. <BR/><BR/>I've thought about these issues a lot more over the past year or so, and recently posted <A HREF="http://rationallongevity.blogspot.com/2007/01/on-longevity-medicine-and-resources.html" REL="nofollow">this</A>, which might make points you'd find a bit clearer.<BR/><BR/>And I like hockey a lot better than basketball, but to each their own. :)AnneChttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04940566603711834053noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-25425497.post-1169588619598496422007-01-23T13:43:00.000-08:002007-01-23T13:43:00.000-08:00Two problems I have with your argument is that, first, people who object to longevity research on fix-the-world-first grounds are just as likely to be the same ones who object to Hello Kitty, sports cars and most other overindulgences you mentioned. Second, you didn't say whether the particular objecters you've seen were talking about privately funded research or government sponsored research (i.e. their tax dollars, something the reality tv shows and football players aren't getting).<BR/><BR/>I do agree with most of this post, especially the vaccine analogy.<BR/><BR/>(Disagree about the basketball shoes though.
